Mattress toppers and pads: thickness, density, and what a topper can fix
A topper is two to four inches of foam, latex or fibre laid over a mattress. It changes how the surface feels and does nothing about what is underneath, and the specification sheet is thickness, material and density — the third of which decides whether it is still doing anything a year on.
What the category is
Memory foam toppers in 2, 3 and 4 inches, often gel-infused or ventilated; latex toppers in the same thicknesses, Dunlop or Talalay, firmer and springier; fibre and down-alternative toppers that add softness and nothing structural; mattress pads, which are thin quilted layers mostly for protection. A topper is not a protector and a pad is barely a topper.
How to read the spec sheet
Thickness: 2 inches changes the feel; 3 inches changes the mattress; 4 inches is a new sleeping surface and will need deep-pocket sheets. Fibre toppers are quoted by fill weight in grams per square metre instead.
Density on foam: 3 pounds per cubic foot and up holds its shape; 2 pounds softens within a year. Most toppers do not state it, and a review says so.
Firmness or ILD on latex: 20 to 24 is soft, 28 to 32 medium, 36 and up firm, and the figure is more consistent than a foam’s marketing word.
Cooling: gel, copper, ventilation holes, phase-change covers. These are claims about heat that a specification cannot verify; a review reports them and says which have a mechanism behind them.
Cover and straps: a removable washable cover and corner straps decide whether the topper stays put and stays clean. Both are on the sheet or not.
Certifications: CertiPUR-US on foam, GOLS on organic latex, OEKO-TEX on covers.
Who it suits
Anyone whose mattress is too firm but still flat; a guest bed or a dorm mattress that needs softening; a latex topper for a side sleeper who wants pressure relief without sinking.
Who should skip it
Anyone whose mattress sags, dips or has lost support. A topper follows the shape of what is under it, and a sagging bed needs a new mattress, not a layer on top.
